The Evangelische Diakonissenanstalt Stuttgart is a church foundation under civil law with its seat in Stuttgart . The Diakonissenanstalt Stuttgart is responsible for caring for sick and old people. The community still includes around 130 deaconesses and around 380 deacon sisters and brothers.

history

The Protestant Diakonissenanstalt Stuttgart was founded in 1854. This was preceded by the establishment of a diakonia association by Charlotte Reihlen , a Stuttgart merchant's wife, and Prelate von Kapff , the Stuttgart collegiate church preacher , in 1853. When the Kaiserswerther Diakonie near Düsseldorf was opened, Charlotte Reihlen was encouraged to set up a similar facility in Stuttgart. She used newspaper advertisements to look for young women who wanted to live in the deaconess' way of life. On August 25, 1854, three young women made the start; after completing their training as nurses in Strasbourg, they came to the Stuttgart court hospital on Büchsenstrasse. The 1940s were one of the heyday of the community. In 1940 there were 1663 deaconesses in the sisterhood. In 1954 470 sisters were active as community nurses in over 260 stations in the country. Today around 200 retired deaconesses live around the mother house in Rosenbergstrasse in Stuttgart. In the meantime employees who feel connected to this tradition have taken over their work.

Sorority

Deaconesses

Most of the remaining deaconesses of the Protestant Diakonissenanstalt Stuttgart are now retired around the mother house in Stuttgart's Rosenbergstrasse. With a biblical-diaconal and technical training and through the consecration they have been prepared for the lifelong service of the deaconess.

Diaconal community

The community of diaconal sisters and brothers emerged from the decline in the number of people entering the service of deaconesses. This community includes women and men who feel connected to the tradition of the Diakonissenanstalt Stuttgart. The members of this community are trained biblically and diaconal and work in various professions, mainly in nursing. The acceptance into the community takes place in the context of a divine service. The diaconal sisters and brothers work in facilities of the Evangelical Diakonissenanstalt Stuttgart or in subsidiary institutions. They live in different ways of life: alone, married or in families. The diaconal sisters and brothers shape the image of the sisterhood by helping to shape meetings, working groups and committees.
