history

The deaconess movement developed in the 19th century at the instigation of Theodor Fliedner , who founded the first deaconess house in 1836 to help the sick and needy. In 1861 the Deaconess Association in Frankfurt am Main was founded and a deaconess house was built in 1874. The founders included five women, four pastors and a lawyer from the Lutheran, French Reformed and German Reformed congregations. Initially, deaconesses from Karlsruhe took over the service. In 1870 the first superior was introduced and the deaconess house at Eschersheimer Landstrasse 122 became independent. The Deaconess Community was at the same time since 1911 an Evangelical Lutheran church . A first chapel was established in the deaconess house in 1874. It was soon too small, which is why a new church was built according to plans by the architect Alfred Günther and completed in 1897. The neo-Gothic building in the shape of a basilica had an infirmary to allow patients to attend the service. The church was destroyed in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main during World War II.

In April 1945, the deaconesses' premises were confiscated by the US military government . In the Villa Manskopf at the Oberforsthaus in Frankfurt-Niederrad , alternative quarters were found until 1955 and a church hall was set up there. After returning to the north end, the services were celebrated in a military barracks that had been prepared as an emergency church. Gradually, various buildings such as the deaconess hospital were built. The architects Meixner and Lueken were commissioned to build the new church. The new deaconess church was consecrated on December 6, 1959. In 1989 the architects Josef Eisenbach and Hans Staiger carried out a thorough renovation.

Its dimensions are almost 30 meters in length and around 22 meters in width in the area of the transept . The plastered, simple building is characterized by a tower facade in the west, which marks the entrance. The gable roof is covered with slate.

The ring of lights above the altar comes from Gotthold Schönwandt's workshop. The stained glass windows in the chancel and the candle table were designed by Hans Staiger.

The organ from 1960 with 16 stops and 2 manuals comes from Werner Bosch Orgelbau and was expanded to 18 stops in 1989.
