Dialectometry
The dialectometry is a research direction within the linguistics . It deals with finding the highest possible order structures in linguistic geographical networks.
The research interest focuses primarily on the regional distribution of dialect similarities , concerns dialect cores and transition zones that are characterized by a more or less low dialect variance between neighboring places. Language atlases , which minutely document the dialectal profile of a large number of survey locations, serve as an empirical database .
Various methods known from numerical classification are used to abstract the underlying basic patterns from the data of the language atlases and then to visualize them.
As a result, a single classification should not be expected. Rather, different aspects of the basic pattern sought can be uncovered by different methods. In principle, dialectometry is interested in the variety of taxometric procedures and the associated results or in the linguistic interpretations that flow from them .
