Diamonen Iceland (in Argentina Islote Madariaga ) is an island off the Danco Coast of Graham Lands on the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located on Gerlache Street , north of Moreno Rock .
Participants in the Belgica expedition (1897–1899), led by the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery , first mapped the island. The Norwegian whaling captain Sverre Skidsmo, who operated the Graham in these waters between 1921 and 1922 , named her Big Diamonen Island . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee shortened this designation on September 23, 1960. The Argentine name is named after the Argentine General Joaquín Madariaga (1799-1848).
