Dick DeGuerin

Dick DeGuerin (born February 16, 1941 in Austin , Texas ) is an American criminal defense attorney .

Life

DeGuerin grew up in Austin, where his father was a lawyer. He studied at the University of Texas until 1963 and graduated with a bachelor's degree . He then attended the university's School of Law and earned a Bachelor of Laws in 1965 . DeGuerin began his professional career in the same year as a district attorney with the Harris County District Attorney's Office in 1965 and joined Butler Binion in 1968. After working on a case together with Percy Foreman, the two lawyers founded their own law firm, which he left in 1982 to found the new law firm DeGuerin & Dickson with Lewis Dickson, which continues to exist with other partners to this day.

DeGuerin is an Associate Professor of Criminal Law in the University of Texas School of Law.

Known cases

DeGuerin defended u. a. Billy Joe Shaver and David Koresh , the leaders and prophets of the Branch Davidians . He became famous in 1994 with the defense of US Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison , who was accused of having misused state funds for her election campaign. In 2005, he defended the House of Representatives majority leader at the time, Tom DeLay , who was charged with donation abuse.

He is currently defending millionaire Robert Durst after a spectacular murder confession. DeGuerin had also defended Durst in 2009 when the millionaire was charged with murdering his neighbor.

Awards

DeGuerin has been an honorary member of the Order of the Coif since 2013 . In 2004 he was named one of the best lawyers in America by the National Law Journal.
