In May 2018, it was announced that Apple had given the go-ahead to produce the series. It was also announced that Hailee Steinfeld will play the lead role as Emily Dickinson.
On August 29, 2018, it was announced that Jane Krakowski would star in the series. On September 29, 2018, Toby Huss , Anna Baryshnikov , Ella Hunt and Adrian Enscoe joined the cast. The shooting of the first season took place from January to March 2019 in Old Bethpage , New York State .
In October 2019, the series was extended for a second season before its release.
