The thick-billed organist ( Euphonia laniirostris ) is a songbird from the genus of organists ( Euphonia ) in the finch family (Fringilidae).
description
The thick-billed organist reaches a length of 12.5 cm. In the males, the cheeks, neck and wings are steel blue. The back of the head and neck have a slight purple sheen. The forehead, chest and underside are colored yellow. The eyes and beak are black. The female is olive-green on the upper side and deeply olive-yellow on the underside with an olive-green tint on the breast. The middle of the abdomen is pure yellow in the female. They differ from other species of the genus Euphonia by their powerful beak, which has earned them the name “pico-gordo” (thick beak) among the native people of Panama.
Occurrence
There are five subspecies ( E. l. Crassirostris , E. l. Hypoxantha, E. l. Laniirostris , E. l. Melanura , E. l. Zopholega ) that are found in the Neotropics of Costa Rica , Panama , northern Venezuela , Colombia , Ecuador , Peru , Bolivia and Brazil are common. The thick-billed organist lives in bushland and tree-covered areas from the plains to heights of 1500 m.
Way of life
It feeds primarily on fruits such as guavas , bananas and mistletoe berries . During the breeding season, a covered nest with a side entrance is built on the ground. Three to five eggs are laid. The young hatch after an incubation period of 14 days. Both parents take care of the rearing of the young, which fledged after about 16 days. There are two to three annual broods from March to August.
