Dictenidia bimaculata is a two-winged bird from the family of the Schnaken (Tipulidae). It is the only species of its genus in Europe.

features

The Schnake reaches a body length of 11.0 to 19.5 millimeters. Their body has a glossy black basic color and has a colorful pattern. The abdomen usually has rust-red spots. The hips ( coxes ) are black-brown. In the males, the antennae are covered with comb teeth from the fourth segment onwards, from the fourth to the eleventh segment the basal tooth is longer than the distal one. The antennae of the females are from the fourth member a little wider than long.

Way of life and distribution

The animals come from Western Europe to the south of Siberia and colonize deciduous and mixed forests. They fly from May to September. The larvae develop on tree stumps.
