Systematics
Within the box thorn ( Lycium ), the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other Argentine and Chilean species of the genus. However, these species are more closely related to an ancient clade than to a large clade to other species from the American continent. Closely related Argentine and Chilean species include Lycium ameghinoi , Lycium fuscum , Lycium stenophyllum, and Lycium minutifolium .
