The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in South America and occurs there in Argentina in the provinces of Catamarca , La Rioja , Mendoza and San Juan .

Systematics

Within the box thorn ( Lycium ), the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other Argentine and Chilean species of the genus. However, these species are more closely related to an ancient clade than to a large clade to other species from the American continent. Closely related Argentine and Chilean species include Lycium ameghinoi , Lycium chanar , Lycium stenophyllum, and Lycium minutifolium .
