description

Lycium minutifolium is an upright shrub that reaches heights of 1 to 2 m. Its leaves are hairy, 0.8 to 2 mm long and 0.7 to 1.5 mm wide.

The flowers are hermaphrodite and fourfold. The calyx is cup-shaped and hairless to fine downy hairy. The calyx tube is 1.5 to 2.5 mm long and covered with 0.5 to 1 mm long calyx lobes. The crown is tubular and white to yellow-green in color. The corolla tube is 10 to 13 mm long, the corolla lobes 1 to 2 mm. The stamens are tomentose at the base in the lower area to 2 to 4 mm.

The fruit is a black, spherical berry with a length of 5 mm and a width of 4 mm. Three to four seeds are formed per carpel .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in South America and occurs there in Chile in the provinces of Atacama and Coquimbo .

Systematics

Within the box thorn ( Lycium ), the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other Argentine and Chilean species of the genus. However, these species are more closely related to an ancient clade than to a large clade to other species from the American continent. Closely related Argentine and Chilean species include Lycium ameghinoi , Lycium chanar , Lycium fuscum, and Lycium stenophyllum .
