Didier Seeuws

Didier Seeuws (born August 1, 1965 in Ghent ) is a Belgian diplomat . Among other things, he was Deputy Permanent Representative of the country to the EU . From 2013 to 2014 he headed the cabinet of the first permanent president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuys . He is currently Director of the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Division of the Council of the European Union .

Life

Didier Seeuws studied European law and diplomacy . In 1991 he joined the diplomatic corps . From July 1991 to July 1995 he was attaché at the Belgian embassy in Washington and from August 1995 to July 1998 attaché to the Belgian Foreign Trade Minister. Seeuws then worked from August 2002 to July 2003 as spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then until July 2007 as spokesman for Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt . From August 2007 to the end of 2012 he was appointed Deputy Permanent Representative of Belgium to the EU. From autumn 2012 to November 30, 2014, Seeuws headed the cabinet of the first President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, as the successor to Frans van Daele .

After the referendum on whether the United Kingdom should remain in the European Union on June 23, 2016 (51.9 percent of the voters voted for a Brexit ), Seeuws is to conduct the exit negotiations with the United Kingdom on behalf of the governments of the EU member states. For the European Commission to Michel Barnier lead the exit negotiations, the European Parliament appointed Guy Verhofstadt to the chief negotiator.
