Adventure of the Baron von Münchhausen - Eine Winterreise is a German animated short film by Hans Held from 1944. It was also shown under the title Die Abenteuer des Baron von Münchhausen - Eine Winterreise .

action

The film begins with a real scene: a hand appears and paints the head of Freiherr von Münchhausen on a blank sheet of paper and colors it. When it's done, the head comes to life and winks at the viewer. The animated film follows:

Münchhausen rides his horse along a path in the deep snow. He comes to a snow-covered hill and rides right through it. Two birds sitting nearby look astonished. Munchhausen crosses a deep ditch by making wings out of his coat and so floats over with his horse; he overcomes an ice surface by making a sail out of his coat and the horse seems to be skating. However, horse and rider sink into an ice hole, from which Munchausen pulls himself out by his own head. The fishermen run away in horror. A little later, Münchhausen lies down in the snow and pegs his horse to a stick protruding from the ground. When he wakes up the next day, he finds himself in front of a church. The snow had covered them the night before, except for the top of the church tower, and it thawed overnight. Münchhausen's horse is now hanging on the top of the church tower. With an aimed shot, Münchhausen loosens the rope and the horse falls at his feet.

Soon after, Münchhausen is on the move by horse-drawn sleigh. He is pursued by a hungry wolf, who finally pounces on him and eagerly devours the entire horse so precisely that the wolf is now hanging in the harness and the horse continues to gallop, assuming the shape of the horse. Munchhausen stops a little later and escapes into a house, but the wolf breaks through the door and rushes at Munchausen. He keeps his hand outstretched, drives the wolf through the body to the tail and then turns his inside outwards. The wolf bones fall to the ground and Münchhausen winks at the audience.

production

Hans Held originally owned his own animation studio in Babelsberg and later came to Bavaria, where, among other things, the propaganda cartoon The Troublemaker was made. The non-political entertainment film Adventure of the Baron von Münchhausen - Eine Winterreise contains various tales of lies that Gottfried August Bürger wrote in 1786 under the title Wonderful Journeys on Water and Land, Campaigns and Funny Adventures of Baron von Münchhausen: how he did the same with the bottle among his friends himself to tell tales had written down. The film was partly made in The Hague .

In 2005 the animated film was released as an extra on the DVD Münchhausen by Transit Film. The film was also released on DVD in 2011 as part of the History of German Animated Film series .
