After completing his training, he worked for Bavaria , whose animation production he was in charge of until 1945. In 1940, during the Third Reich , Held directed the militaristic propaganda cartoon The Troublemaker . In 1944 he was the director of the animated film Adventure of Baron von Münchhausen - A Winter Journey .

After the end of the Second World War he moved to Hamburg, where he created the cartoon Kalif Storch with Hans Georg Dammann . Many drawing films were made in the Held Studio. In addition, he worked as a graphic designer for various commercial companies. From 1948 to 1967 he worked as a freelancer at Axel Springer Verlag, including the entire advertising with the HÖRZU mascot Mecki. This also included the only 13 drawing films with Mecki in advertising. At HÖRZU he only worked for advertising, never for the Meckicomics.

He also illustrated a large number of books for young people and non-fiction.

In addition, Hans Held dealt with aviation technology and rocket propulsion in the private sector. He became famous here for the "Held 1000" drive, which he invented in 1948 and which has been used in model making for decades.
