The Ant ( Danish Myren ; English The Ant ) is a well-known wooden chair by the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen . The chair was designed by Jacobsen in 1951 for the canteen of the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk . From 1952 it was produced by the Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen .

In addition to its characteristic three legs, the ant is characterized by the use of - for the time of its development - modern materials and production techniques. The seat and back are made from a single piece of plywood that has to be bent for this purpose. The backrest narrows sharply at its lower section. This waist shape gave the chair its name. In the first version of the chair, its legs were made of plastic, but were replaced with steel tubing in later versions. The materials used and its construction give the chair a comparatively low weight with simultaneous stability. The ant is also stackable.

The ant is considered to be the predecessor of Jacobsen's Series 7 chairs from 1955, which, however, have four legs. The chair is part of various museum collections around the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Design Museum Danmark in Copenhagen.
