The story of sensitivity

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The story of sensitivity is an unfinished cycle of novels by the writer Hubert Fichte (1935–1986). The cycle appeared posthumously and in fragments in seventeen volumes from 1987 to 2006.

Edition

Fichte began The History of Sensitivity in 1974 and laid it out in nineteen volumes. Until his death on March 8, 1986, the author was able to finish six of the volumes at hand as typescripts . This affects most of the novels. However, more episodes were planned and many feature and radio play manuscripts could no longer be revised by the author. For example, some radio broadcasts are difficult to understand in printed form for the reader.

The edition was published by S. Fischer Verlag in Frankfurt . Sixteen volumes are edited by Gisela Lindemann and Torsten Teichert in collaboration with Leonore Mau . The author had given the volume The Second Debt a blocking period of 30 years. Therefore, the third volume in the cycle could not appear until 2006 as the last volume - edited by Ronald Kay.

In addition to novels, which make up the largest part of the cycle, essays, travel reports, interviews and radio reports are also represented in volumes with the generic name glosses .

The biggest gap in comparison to Fichte's last plans is after the volume Explosion , where he had planned seven more volumes. Among them were three novels that are now completely missing. For four planned volumes of glosses he had at least selected extensive material that is now in the Paraleipomena .

content

The main characters of the narrative part are the homosexual writer Jäcki and his girlfriend, the photographer Irma. The locations are Hamburg with various pubs and gay clubs as well as Portugal, Brazil and several African places, where the two travel extensively.

The factual texts include ethnographic essays, especially on the syncretistic religions of Brazil , and radio reports on Fichte's literary models.
