Summary of the plot

In Beijing of the 18th century (March 18, 1741) enters the young Wei Yingluo the court of the Qianlong -Kaisers Aisin Gioro Hongli as one of the palace embroideresses to secretly investigate the truth about the mysterious death of her sister. At first, Yingluo believes the Imperial Guard Fuca Fuheng is the prime suspect and approaches his sister, Empress Fuca Rongyin , by managing to be transferred as a maid from her embroidery unit to the Empress's Changchun home. Over time, she learns that the Fuca siblings are honest and kindhearted people who are exempt from the crime, and even develops romantic affection for Fuheng, who is admired by many around the palace, including Qianlong's consort Chun, who is allied with Empress Fuca because she is in love with her brother.

occupation

main actor

Wu Jinyan plays the role of Wei Yingluo in all episodes (1 to 70). The protagonist, an antihero ahead of her time in knowledge and reasoning, who uses her innate abilities to rise above the entanglements of conventional palace rivalries for nobler reasons and thus win the power game against the big bosses on the street. She is the female version of the Monkey King, who through trial and error learns the meaning of the journey and ultimately gains wisdom in her position alongside the emperor.

Charmaine Sheh portrays the role of Hoifa-Nara Shushen, a wife of the emperor, in 61 episodes. In the course of the "survival of the fittest" in the palace, she transforms from an angel into a kind of Lucifer. Skilfully and intelligently, she illustrates a woman who loses her head to her heart and thus in the end loses everything else. She is a tragic heroine.

Qin Lan portrays the first Empress Fuca Rongyin in 38 episodes. She portrays the "ideal woman" according to the Chinese classical traditions as a kind-hearted, amiable, virtuous woman. But she is also a woman who is in the wrong place at the wrong time and who is not ready to submit to the requirements of their position. Only through her demise does she escape the burden of responsibility as empress and wife towards the emperor.

Yuan never plays "Emperor Qianlong " in 61 episodes (1–3, 6–8, 10–70). The emperor of the Qing Dynasty is both a symbol and a victim of a feudal system of rigid positions of power that condemns him to be himself. Outwardly aloof and dispassionate, he draws his joys from covering the people below him, from his servants to his wives, with such biting criticism that his brother Hongzhou calls him "the most heartless man under heaven".

Enshang Liu portrays the chief eunuch and loyal servant of Emperor Qianlong in 65 episodes. He can read his master's face and has nothing against being the backside (literally) of his aggressions.

Reception and controversy

The series caused a stir online for telling a " Cinderella " story with Chinese features. It set the one-day online audience record in China with a total of 530 million viewers and has been seen by a total of over 13 billion viewers since August 2018. Starting on July 19, it has been the most watched online drama in the People's Republic of China for 39 consecutive days. More than 300 million viewers followed the machinations of the power-obsessed concubines on average every day. This makes it the most-watched Chinese TV drama in 2018 and the most googled show in the world in the same year.
