IQIYI ( Chinese  愛 奇 藝  /  爱 奇 艺 , Pinyin Àiqíyì , formerly Qiyi 奇 藝  /  奇 艺 , Qíyì ) is a video-on-demand provider based in Beijing , China , which was founded on April 22, 2010. IQiyi is one of the largest video websites in China right now. Worldwide nearly 6 billion hours per month are counted for the service and over 500 million active users per month. When it went public in the United States on March 29, 2018, the company raised $ 2.25 billion.

history

Qiyi was founded on April 22, 2010 by Baidu, China's largest online search engine, and Providence Equity Partners , and changed its name to iQiyi in November 2011. On November 2, 2011, iQiyi acquired the online license for Transformers: Dark of the Moon from Paramount in mainland China. On November 2, 2012, Baidu acquired Providence's stake and acquired 100% of the website. On May 7, 2013, Baidu acquired the online video business from PPStream Inc. for $ 370 million, which became a subsidiary of iQiyi. On July 17, 2014, the site launched its film production department, iQiyi Motion Pictures, to expand existing collaborative projects with foreign colleagues, including publishing publications and co-producing films. On September 4th, iQiyi cooperated with the Venice Film Festival and broadcast the festival's films online. In August 2014, iQiyi had over 6.95 billion hours of viewing time on its website. In October, iQiyi participated in the Busan International Film Festival and signed exclusive rights to nearly 100 South Korean titles. On November 19, 2014, Xiaomi and Shunwei Capital invested $ 300 million in iQiyi for about 10 to 15 percent of the site, while Baidu invested another $ 100 million and held about 80 percent.

On December 8, 2014, Ma Dong, iQiyi's chief content officer , said the portal wanted to more than double its original production in 2015 with at least 30 titles and 500 episodes, compared to 13 in 2014. In 2015, iQiyi acquired the online rights to eight top entertainment shows in mainland China, as well as several entertainment shows in Taiwan and South Korea, including Hurry Up, Brother . In March 2016, the company announced that it would launch in Taiwan . In June 2016, it had 20 million subscribers.

On April 25, 2017, Netflix announced that it had signed a licensing agreement with iQiyi, according to which some original Netflix productions will be available elsewhere on the iQiyi day-and-date with their premiere.

In November 2018, iQiyi announced that it needed new capital due to increased content costs and that it would issue a convertible bond for USD 500 million. Proceeds from the offering will be channeled into content and technology investments as well as capped call transactions to reduce potential dilution for shareholders on the conversion.

According to iResearch, a widely quoted third-party industrial research firm, as of October 2014 iQiyi and PPS had a total of 202.18 million mobile viewers who watched 600.62 million hours of content on these platforms, with the number of mobile videos totaling 308.17 million mobile Viewers who saw a total of 1176.44 million hours of content on these platforms. Total video views reached 500 million. Each viewer followed the content for an average of 229.05 minutes in October. In mid-2015, the website had 5 million subscribers, in late 2015 / early 2016 it was over 10 million and by June 2016 it was 20 million.

iQiyi bought exclusive Chinese rights to the hit South Korean drama series My Love from the Star , which has been viewed 2.7 billion times to date.

In 2014 iQiyi produced and distributed the drama Mysterious Summer together with the Japanese television channel Fuji TV . It was the first dramatic co-production between China and Japan and has been viewed more than 60 million times since October 2014.
