Joseph Loya

Joseph Loya (* 1942 in Bulgaria) is an Israeli biologist and expert on coral reefs.

Life

Joseph Loya was born in 1942 to a Jewish family in what is now Bulgaria, who emigrated to Israel in 1944. From 1962 to 1967 he studied biology and zoology at Tel Aviv University .

In 1971 he completed his PhD in ecology from Stony Brook University (New York). From 1971 to 1972 he spent a postdoctoral year at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution .

1977–1979 he was chairman of the Israel Zoological Society. In 1980 he was appointed Associate Professor at his alma mater and promoted to Full Professor in 1986 .

From 1980 to 1991 he undertook six ship expeditions to the Red Sea . Loya has been retired since 2011.

Among other things, Joseph Loya dealt with coral bleaching .

The Deterioration Index developed by Loya and published in 2004 for assessing the health status of a coral reef is one of the most cited papers in the field of reef research.
