Thomas Cottier

Thomas Cottier (born May 5, 1950 ) is a Swiss professor emeritus for European and international business law at the University of Bern . He was visiting professor at the Graduate Institute in Geneva , at the Paris Sorbonne at the University of Barcelona and teaches regularly at the Europa Institut Saarbrücken , at Wuhan University , at the University of Torino and most recently at the University of Ottawa .

He held various positions in the Department of Foreign Trade and as Deputy Director General of the Federal Office for Intellectual Property . Cottier has long been active in the GATT and WTO areas. He was a member or chairman of several GATT and WTO bodies and is currently on a high-level body reviewing international health regulations for the World Health Organization .

Career

From 1986 to 1993 he was a member of the Swiss negotiating team for the Uruguay Round , first as negotiator for dispute settlement and subsidies for Switzerland and later as negotiator for TRIPs . From 1997 to 2004 he was a member of the Swiss Research Council and at the same time was on the board of the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) Rome . From 1998 to 2005 he was Of Counsel for the law firm Baker & McKenzie . From 2006 to 2014 he headed the national research program for commercial law and policy at the World Trade Institute of the University of Bern.

From 1994 to 2015 he taught European and International Business Law at the University of Bern.

He has published numerous publications in the field of international business law , with a particular focus on constitutional theory and intellectual property . He is co-editor of several magazines.
