history

Russell Baker
John McKenzie

Founding partner Russell Baker opened his first law firm, Baker & Simpson, in Chicago in 1925 . Baker was introduced to the Spanish language early on , so his law firm provided legal services to the growing Mexican-American community. In 1949, John McKenzie joined the company and took care of litigation, while Baker continued to expand international practice.

The firm later began advising companies on investments in Latin America and opened several offices in the region. In 1989, Baker McKenzie was one of the first law firms to open offices in the former Soviet Union after the fall of the Iron Curtain . In California , the firm merged with MacDonald, Halsted, and Laybourne and opened offices there too.

In 2001 the company employed 3,000 lawyers and exceeded the turnover threshold of $ 1 billion. At that time, the law firm was reorganized as an association under Swiss law. Several independent entities share branding policy, administrative functions and various operating costs, but at the same time have separate pots for income and partner compensation.

At the turn of the millennium, the appointment of Christine Lagarde , today's President of the European Central Bank (ECB) , as Managing Partner of the firm attracted a great deal of attention . In 2005 the firm got another growth spurt when many New York employees of the dissolving law firm Coudert Brothers joined it. Since 2009, Baker McKenzie has opened further offices - in addition to America, also in Europe and Asia. In December 2016, the "&" sign previously in the name was dropped as part of a brand rebranding.
