The grazer

The Grazer , Cod. Pal. germ. 4, sheet 208v (below)

The Grazer is an Upper German Minnerede that was probably made in the 14th century .

The author-ego emphasizes in sometimes drastic and obscene formulations the advantages of low love for a grass girl compared to high love. According to the conclusion, which is only handed down in the longer version of the Heidelberg manuscript (the text at the end is dated 1479), it could have been a poetic New Year's greeting.

The poem has survived in two manuscripts from the 15th century, both of which are available online:

  • Dresden, SLUB, Mscr. Dresden. M65 (Iwein manuscript), Bl. 1ra – 1vb (131 verses)
  • Heidelberg, UB, Cod. Pal. germ. 4 (written by Konrad Bollstatter ), Bl. 208v – 210v (194 verses)

It was reprinted by Adelbert von Keller in 1846 from the Heidelberg manuscript.

As an example of the coarse expression, let us quote (Keller p. 7):

The because she had ain pure grass
Hynden on the ars
tied and didn’t throw herself down.
All shame is foreign to vns,
Jn the saddle on jr hembdt
Knye me with cracked gsper.

Reception
The main task of a grass maid was to cut grass to feed the cattle. The Brothers Grimm also say: "the grazer is a popular figure in folk songs and poems with erotic content" or "the grazing of girls and women is a popular literary motif in connection with love adventures" ( German dictionary )

  • Graserin (111) is the title of a lid in the list of Old High and Low German Folk Songs by Ludwig Uhland.
  • The Grazer (around 1740) is published by Ludwig Erk in the Deutsches Liederhort .
