The hand of fate is a German Stummfilmmelodram from 1913. Directed by Eugen Illés played Leopoldine Konstantin the lead.

action

Count Strehlenau has started an affair with a dancer who, as expected, is viewed in his circles as not befitting. While the dancer believes in the authenticity of his feelings, the aristocrat's love for the young girl only lasts until he has to equalize his debts due to the expensive way of life with a "rich marriage". He leaves the dancer who is pregnant and who then sinks into misery and poverty.

Years have passed and the daughter has become a beautiful, young woman who works as an artist model. The painter Oswald, who is about to immortalize her, is also a friend of Strehlenau junior, and therefore the girl's stepbrother. When she and Oswald get married, the young Strehlenau insults his friend. As is usual in such circles, there is a duel in which Oswald is killed. Full of anger, the young girl, who had rushed to the duel, grabs the gun and judges her own (half) brother. When it comes to the police investigation, the sad old Count Strehlau learns that his own flesh and blood had shot his son. In prison, where the widow has to serve a year in prison, Strehlenau confesses that he is her father and that he once behaved shabbily towards her mother.

Production notes

The Hand of Fate was created in the Literaria-Film-Atelier in Berlin-Tempelhof , passed the film censorship in November 1913 and was premiered on December 20, 1913. The film had three acts, spread over 971 meters in length. The Austrian premiere took place in Vienna on December 26, 1913.

Individual evidence

  1. There is some confusion about this film, because according to literature (e.g. Gerhard Lamprecht's German Silent Films) there are supposedly two films with this title and the same leading actress Leopoldine Konstantin. While the film presented here started in 1913, the other hand of fate with Konstantin in the leading role was a production from 1912, which was directed by Carl Wilhelm and written by Heinrich Bolten-Baeckers. This film, produced by Bolten-Baeckers, opened on November 30, 1912. It cannot be completely ruled out that, despite different production dates, both films are identical to one another.
