Eugene Illés

Eugen Illés (born January 28, 1879 in Debrecen , † October 17, 1951 in Budapest ; born Jenö Illés ) was a Hungarian cameraman , film director , film producer and screenwriter .

Life

He studied classical philosophy, astronomy, mathematics and music in Budapest and Berlin. In 1901 he worked as an engineer and writer.

In 1912 he became a cameraman and soon afterwards also a director at the film production company Duskes GmbH in Berlin. As a director, he played a major role in the discovery of the silent film star Erna Morena . In 1913 he was signed by Alfred Duskes in his newly founded production company Literaria Film , with a monthly salary of 600 marks plus bonus, i.e. approx. 2,420 euros.

Illés mainly staged sensational and adventure stories, as well as comedies and melodramas.

In 1915 he temporarily returned to Hungary and made films for various clients in Budapest. From 1917 Illés was back in Berlin and worked for Neutral-Film as a director, cameraman and screenwriter. The first film adaptation of the novel Alraune was made under his direction in 1918 . Illés also worked as a film producer and owned the "Illés Film Company mbH" (1921–1928) and the "Illés-Film GmbH" (1922–1928). In November 1928 he founded the "Rote Mühle GmbH" and took over the management of the Berlin cinema of the same name (Kurfürstendamm 122).
