action

The young Rolf has just finished the conservatory and is about to become a major musician. He swore love and loyalty to Ellen Holm, the daughter of his landlord, but now, at the height of fame, she is no longer good enough for him. He believes he has found the right person in a society lady who also promises the violin virtuoso social advancement and recognition. But the great success is followed by artistic crash, and the women who have just adored Rolf leave him by the wayside. The planned wedding with the daughter of a wealthy wholesaler also falls apart as a result of his loss of fame. In a bar-like bar, Rolf fiddles with his violin the grief of his wrong ways from his soul and threatens to sink into artistic nowhere.

But Ellen has not forgotten him, her love for the great artist is overwhelming even in the moment of his decline. Her heart is bleeding, she laments and wails. And finally, she writes down her feelings under the pseudonym “Dolorosa” (the painful) in a novel-like book. The novel becomes a bestseller and flushes a lot of money into Ellen's wallet. Completely altruist, she has nothing else in mind than to become the anonymous patroness and financial supporter of Rolf, to whom she regularly donates a sum of money as an “unknown admirer of his art”. With her donations she wants to get him out of the cheap bars and pubs and bring him back to the shores of true art. When Rolf also reads the book, he suspects who is behind this pseudonym. Finally, both find each other again.

criticism

“In the Ellen Holm we find Erna Morena again. This personable actress grows with every role she plays. This sensual girl figure, who this time she knows how to shape with such beautiful, angelic features, they move infinitely close to the hearts of the audience. The final scene is a brilliant achievement of fine characteristics. The actors of the old pensioner Holm, who betrays Reinhardt's school, and the artist Rolf also participate in this. The staging is magnificent. The concert was excellent. "
