The Mounties of Lynx River (original title: North of 60 ) is a Canadian television series that originally aired on CBC from 1992 to 1997 and resulted in five television films. Developed by Wayne Grigsby and Barbara Samuels , the series is about life in a small town in the Northwest Territories , with an RCMP officer as the main character. Characters and their actors are predominantly First Nations . Lynx River's Mounties was conceived as a police series and contains elements from soap operas and docu-drama .

The series comprises 90 episodes in six seasons and has been shown worldwide. In Germany , a dubbed version, limited to 32 episodes, was premiered in 1999 .

Plot and characters

The action takes place in the fictional small town Lynx River , which is mainly inhabited by members of the indigenous peoples of Canada. The plot of the episodes result from criminal cases, central problems within the First Nations community in the north, the personal lives of the main characters and the surrounding wilderness. A central character of the first two seasons was Eric Olssen, a white policeman from Vancouver who can be transferred to Lynx River and has to learn to cope with the new environment. After he left the series, his colleague, Constable Michelle Kenidi, remained as a leading role. Her brother Peter is the local chief. The criminal Albert Golo acts as Michelle Kenidi's constant opponent.

Production and broadcast

The Mounties of Lynx River was created after an idea by Wayne Grigsby and Barbara Samuels. The series is a co-production by CBC, Alliance Films and Alberta Filmworks and was funded primarily through the government agency Telefilm . The location was Bragg Creek , Alberta .

From December 3, 1992 to December 18, 1997, 90 episodes ran in six seasons on CBC. This was followed by the television films with the original titles In the Blue Ground (1999), Trial by Fire (2000), Dream Storm (2001), Another Country (2003) and Distant Drumming (2005). The series and films were broadcast by broadcasters around the world. In Germany, a version limited to 32 episodes was premiered in 1999.

Awards

The television series was nominated for the Gemini Award in numerous categories from 1994 to 1998 . The award was won a total of five times. For example, the actress Tantoo Cardinal was honored with the award in 1996 in the category Best Performance by an Actress in a Guest Role in a Dramatic Series . The leading actress Tina Keeper also received an award the following year.
