Gordon Tootoosis
Gordon Tootoosis (born October 25, 1941 in the Poundmaker Reservation , † July 5, 2011 in Saskatoon ) was a Canadian actor who was descended from the Cree and Stoney .
Life
As a child and adolescent, Tootoosis went through a school period in which he was forced to renounce the language of his ancestors and family and initially worked as a social worker. His interest in the culture of his people then led him to tour numerous countries in the 1960s and 1970s as a participant in the Plains InterTribal Dance Group show . Tootoosis was politically active as Vice President of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations .
Tootoosis played his first film role in 1973, which was followed by over eighty more before his death. Some of the best known are those in the TV series North of 60 , Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Moccasin Flats . Tootoosis received the Gemini Award .
Tootoosis, who was a great promoter of Native American actors, was awarded the Order of Canada in October 2004 . He died on July 5, 2011 of pneumonia in Saskatoon .
