The Spider is a German silent film melodrama from 1913.

action

Mimi Carcasse - the name alone not only sounds like foreign temptation, this woman is pure depravity and erotic sin! Mimi, the eponymous “spider” in this story, wants to seduce men, to make them submissive, and then to let them end up in the gutter. As a new “victim” she spied out honest Ernst Huebner, who initially knew how to defend himself against all her temptations with hands and feet. When he pushes Mimi back, only the fire of vengeance and the iron will is awakened in her to finally "conquer" this struggling man, to make him subject to her. Out of injured vanity, the "spider" threw her web over the well-behaved German, who initially does not want to indulge in her seductive skills. Hübner, who loves someone else, the faithful Marta Brinken, is gradually worn down by a web of intrigues that the "spider" throws over him and begins to doubt.

Soon he succumbs to Mimi's spiteful whisperings, believes the suspicion she arouses in him regarding Marta's allegedly questionable allegiance and which is supposed to make him angry against the woman of his heart. In the end, Hübner leaves his bride Marta, but that is not enough for Mimi. She now wants to ruin this man economically too. The human-shaped spider seems to succeed in any of its meanness: Ernst gets on the dog, gets down social and begins to drink unrestrainedly. When he then also has to mourn Marta's death, he realizes that he has reached the lowest point of his existence. And only one is to blame! In a mixture of endless sadness, drunkenness and mental confusion, he grabs the culprit, puts his hands around her neck and puts an end to the shabby existence of the "spider".

Production notes

The Spider passed film censorship in August 1913 and premiered on September 6, 1913. The three-acter measured about 1,100 meters.

criticism

“'The Spider' is a woman who knows no obstacle to ensnare a man. It is ruthlessly subject to the violence and savagery of its blood and its sensual exaltations. (…) Traute Carlsen… plays this character with her peculiar, cat-like speed and instinctive performance. As is always the case with Duskes, the other contributors are also put in the right place with an excellent eye. The film is very interesting. "
