Die Steinkohle is a two-part documentary by the German directors Jobst Knigge and Manfred Oldenburg from 2018 with the titles "Die Steinkohle - Aufbruch in ein neue Zeit" (Part 1) and "Die Steinkohle - Ende der Ära" (Part 2).

The film takes the end of hard coal production in Germany in 2018 as an opportunity to tell the story of hard coal in Europe. In the first part, the documentation looks at the beginnings of hard coal mining in the Middle Ages and continues to tell the story of industrialization up to the 1920s using archive material and re-enactments .

The second part of the documentary begins with the post-war period of the First World War in Europe and chronologically tells the history of hard coal mining in Western Europe in the 20th century and its end in 2018.

The film is a co-production by BROADVIEW TV , ZDF and ARTE with the support of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW . The spokesman for the commentary is Jörg Hartmann .

Awards and nominations

"Die Steinkohle" is nominated in the category "Best Documentary Multi-Part" at the upcoming German TV Award.
