The road roller and the violin is the diploma film by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky .
action
The film tells of a boy named Sascha, whose everything is his violin and who thereby makes himself an outsider. Other children are bothering him, and in such a situation the driver of a road construction roller assists him and later encourages him to help a distressed boy himself. A gentle friendship develops between the roller operator Sergei and Sascha. After Sascha was initially allowed to ride the roller, Sergei later gets an insight into playing the violin. Sergei is proud of the traces of hard work on his hands, Sascha is proud of the traces of playing the violin on his chin. But Sasha's parents think that a road worker is not the right company for their son. Sascha misses an appointment with Igor, who wanted to go to the cinema with him. He now takes his girlfriend with him, who was already jealous of the boy. Sascha can only experience the meeting in his fantasy: In the final scene he goes to the red road roller.
background
It is noticeable that already in this film things seem to be magically charged and open up a wide field of association for the viewer. The apples that roll away from a woman in this film reappear as a poetic reference in Ivan's childhood . The recurring motif of mirrors and water also play an important role in Tarkowski's diploma film and refer to later masterpieces such as Der Spiegel or the extensive water scenes in all of his films.
