features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 32 to 40 millimeters. The variability in the basic color and the drawing is high. The color spectrum of the forewings ranges from ocher-brown to red-brown to purple-brown. Ring and kidney defects are light brown, sometimes clearly highlighted and outlined in black. Little indistinct appearing Zapf blemish . The wavy line is slightly lightened and delimits the mostly darker fringing area. The almost square, black field between the ring and kidney flaws and the very light front edge are particularly striking. However, there are also shapes in which the drawing elements are less clear. The hind wings are whitish to gray-brown without drawing. Euxoa temera can be easily distinguished from other species that show a similar appearance on the upper side by a dark spot on the underside of the forewings behind the kidney blemishes . The antennae of the male moths are combed on both sides, those of the females are thread-like.

Egg, caterpillar and pupa

The egg is smooth and yellowish in color. The caterpillars are not marked, have a glassy sheen and are gray-white in color. The pupa is reddish brown with a few lateral chitin bristles and two distinct thorns on the cremaster .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs in southern Europe , north Africa , parts of Ukraine and Russia , Armenia and the Caucasus, as well as in Central Asia , Turkey , Iran and Iraq . In Germany , the species is not native. Older reports from Baden-Württemberg are obviously based on incorrect determinations or possibly refer to individual immigrants . However, Euxoa temera was found in the German-speaking countries in some places in eastern Austria and in the Swiss canton of Valais . It prefers warm and dry places with low vegetation.

Way of life

The species forms one generation per year; The main flight time of the nocturnal moths are the months August to October. They come to artificial light sources and visit the bait . The food spectrum of the caterpillars includes various grasses , especially their roots. In Hungary and Italy , they have sometimes appeared harmful in grain fields in the past .
