Die Tore der Welt is a board game by Michael Rieneck and Stefan Stadler that was published by Kosmos- Verlag in 2009 . It takes up the theme of the novel of the same name by Ken Follett . The game is played with two to four players, and a game lasts around 90 to 120 minutes. Players aged twelve and over are specified as the target group.
Backstory
The Gates of the World is set in England from 1337 to 1361. 200 years ago a prior had a new cathedral built in the fictional town of Kingsbridge , which is the plot of The Pillars of the Earth . The players become farmers, wool merchants and builders and strive for prosperity and reputation. The players have to earn their own living; a pious and loyal way of life advances them. Food and income are scarce in times of plague and the king wants to finance his wars with taxes.
Game flow
The game is divided into four chapters, each with six rounds being played. Several years pass in each chapter during which the players can take part in building projects in order to gain victory points. Duties have to be paid after each chapter. From the second chapter the plague breaks out. Medical care for sick residents earns you additional victory points.
At the beginning of each round, an event card is revealed and its event is carried out immediately. Events can be one-time or permanent. Then the card is aligned, because this determines the income for the other players. The income is then distributed. The players' supply is kept behind the screens, not visible to the others. With the alignment of the event card, the favor stone is advanced on the favor sheet and the active player receives the advantage that is displayed on the favor field.
In the next phase of the round, all players lay out one of their action cards one after the other. This gives the respective player additional income or can place building materials on the building project or he can sell wool and cloth. At the end of a round, permanent event cards are placed on the edge of the field, as they are valid until the end of the current chapter. Then the next round begins.
A chapter ends after every six rounds. First of all, another building material is placed on top of all construction projects that have been started and all event cards and cover tiles are removed from the game board. All players have to pay two piety and two grain as a compulsory fee. If they cannot do this, they lose victory points accordingly. The tax cube is used to determine the amount of taxes between 2 and 5 money. Here, too, the players lose victory points if they cannot pay the taxes.
The game ends after four chapters and the player with the most victory points wins.
Game material
The game pieces and figures are made of wood. Additional accessories are made from cardboard in punched sheets.
