The root is a journal for mathematics that appears ten times a year .

It arises from the math camps that have been held twice a year since 1964. These were and are organized by students for students who are particularly interested in mathematics. In 1967, on the initiative of Hansgeorg Meißner, the student magazine Die Wurzel was created at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the non-profit root e. V. founded to ensure the continued existence of the magazine. The aim of the association and the magazine is to infect the largest possible audience with an enthusiasm for mathematics, as well as to encourage young people who are interested in mathematics in particular and to awaken their creativity to solve problems.

The first editions were made by hand. At the beginning of the 1990s, however, modern computing technology found its way and, under the direction of Frank Thierbach, the creation process was converted to LaTeX .

For more than 300 issues, the root has been aimed at high school students and teachers, students, professors and anyone interested in mathematics. The root contains articles on various branches of mathematics, on mathematics Olympiads and other mathematical competitions, as well as, for example, works from the Jugend forscht competition .

The root does not claim to be a mathematical research journal. The detailed appraisal of articles by professors, for example, is not planned, as it is primarily about having fun and enthusiasm for mathematics.

In addition to the publication of the magazine, the association organizes the above-mentioned holiday camps twice a year, the so-called mathematics student academy or simply math camps , in which mathematically interested students deal with topics beyond the school curriculum. Other leisure activities such as Marjapussi are also carried out.

In 2017 the root celebrated its 50th anniversary in the Jenaer Volksbad. Root father Meißner and co-founder Klaus Fischer also took part.
