The six swans and their sister are a work of art that consists of two bronze sculptures and was created by Albrecht Glenz (1907–1990) for public spaces in Hanau .

shape

The sculpture consists of two parts: the group of six swans, which are presented as they are staggered as they fly through the forest - symbolized by the vertical trunks. You are focused on the second part of the sculpture, the sister.

history

The sculpture was created by Albrecht Glenz in 1980–1984. The original installation site was the intersection between Sternstrasse and Hammerstrasse , the southwest corner of Freiheitsplatz , (Schwanengruppe) and Hammerstrasse itself (sister), at that time the central part of the pedestrian zone in downtown Hanau. When the foundation pit for the swan group was excavated, remains of production from the Hanau faience factory were found during an archaeological emergency excavation .

The choice of the motif for the sculpture was determined by two factors: On the one hand, Hanau is the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm, from whose collection of children's and house fairy tales the fairy tale The Six Swans comes. On the other hand, the swan as a helmet ornament has been part of the Hanau coat of arms since the first half of the 14th century.

In 2011, a fundamental renovation of the Hanau city center began, which mainly affected the Freiheitsplatz and to which the monument had to give way. The Hanau Castle Garden was chosen as the new location . Here the central pond was included in the presentation. While the sister stands on the bank, the swans are approaching over the lake. The work of art has been on view here since 2014.

content

The six swans are shown as a group and stretched horizontally. They are shown in flight through the forest, just as they appear in fairy tales. The sister she's about to fly at is shown at the stake from which her six brothers are about to rescue her. In her hands she holds the six star flower shirts that she has sewn over the past six years to give to the swans and thus break the magic.
