Diego López de Zúñiga

Diego López de Zúñiga Avellaneda y Velasco (also: Jacobus Lopis Stunica ; around * 1470 in the province of Estremadura ; † 1531 in Naples ) was a Spanish humanist , theologian and scholar who u. a. also became known for his controversies with Erasmus and Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples .

Live and act

Diego López de Zúñiga was born around 1470 in Extremadura in an aristocratic family, the house of Zúñiga . He was a student of the Portuguese Arias Barbosa who taught at the University of Salamanca . De Zúñiga was won over by Cardinal Jiménez de Cisneros , the founder of the University of Alcalá, to work on the Complutensic Polyglot , Biblia políglota complutense . The cardinal put him in charge of the entire edition. Other employees were u. a. the Latinist Hernán Núñez de Toledo y Guzmán and Alfonso de Zamora a Hebraist . De Zúñiga had a knowledge of Aramaic and Arabic . The translation of the Bible was published as a six-volume monumental work. They designed the page layout in the form of a column set , which presented the different languages in columns side by side; a Bible in Hebrew, Greek, Latin and partly in Aramaic.
