Diego de San Pedro

Diego de San Pedro (* 1437 ; † 1498 ) was a Spanish poet and writer of romances.

Life

San Pedro was likely of Jewish descent. Overall, little is known about his life. His two prose romances "Arnalte y Lucenda" (1491) and "La cárcel de amor" (1492) were influenced by similar works by Italian authors, particularly Giovanni Boccaccio's "Fiammetta". The works developed the theme of the faithful lover, they were widespread and popular. They have been translated into Italian , French and English . A German translation of “La cárcel de amor” comes from Johann Ludwig von Kuefstein and appeared in 1625. San Pedro also wrote poems, including a popular story of the death of Christ .
