biography

Hans Ludwig von Kuefstein at the age of 21 (1604)

He comes from the old noble family Kuefstein from Lower Austria , who like a large part of the Upper and Lower Austrian landed nobility were Protestant. Trained by private court masters, he followed his older brothers Lorenz and Wilhelm first to Prague (1590–1593) and then to Jena, where he matriculated at the university there at the age of twelve. His studies took him to Italy, where he acquired further knowledge from 1600 to 1601 at the universities of Padua , Bologna and Siena . After returning home, he stayed for a short time at the university in Prague. In 1603 he made a trip to Spain. Despite the Counter-Reformation persecution of his co-religionists, he represented their interests as a Protestant and was always welcome at court. When it came time to reach an armistice agreement with the Sultan and time was short, he was sent to Constantinople as ambassador . This commission overtook him only a few weeks after his conversion to the Catholic faith (on September 27, 1627 he received communion in public). After a personal audience with Emperor Ferdinand II and his wife and the assurance that he would look after his family in the event of failure (his still young wife was heavily pregnant), he agreed and finally left Austria in July 1628. He reached a 30-year truce with Sultan Murad IV and thanked the Mother of God for the safe return (in December 1629), who, according to his personal reports, “must always have had a protective hand over him”.

In recognition of his services, he was appointed governor of Upper Austria in 1630 as successor to Adam von Herberstorff . He made a special contribution in the Upper Austrian Peasant Wars, where he tried very hard to find a peaceful solution, which earned him great popularity among the population. Promoted to the secret council in 1630 , he was raised to the rank of imperial count in 1634. Kuefstein died richly wealthy in Linz in 1656 and was buried here in the Minorite Church.

Hans Ludwig von Kuefstein was married to Maria Grabner von Rosenburg (1589–1623), daughter of Sebastian II. Grabner zu Rosenburg , and his second marriage to Susanna Eleonora von Stubenberg (1602–1658). The children of Gottlieb, Gotthilf, Anna Dorothea, Eleonora, Constantia, Susanna Maria, Theresia, Lobgott (1632–1680), Ehrgott, Gottrau, Preisgott, Diengott, Gottwill, Johanna Ludwiga and Hilfgott (1643–1713) came from the second marriage. On July 25, 1648 von Kuefstein married his underage daughter Susanna Maria against her will with the 57-year-old Johann von Werth .

Kuefstein's literary work consists of translations from the Spanish of Montemayor 's shepherd novel Diana (1619, published several times and revised by Georg Philipp Harsdörffer in 1646 ) and Diego de San Pedro's romance novel Gefängnüss der Lieb ( Carcel de Amor , 1492), mainly of six diaries in whom he reports on his diplomatic missions. They have not yet been printed. An unprinted translation of Boccaccio's Fiammetta was lost, and a selection translation of Seneca's letters ( Der Christian Seneca ) appeared posthumously in 1670.
