His students secretly film Holoborodko's rant about Ukrainian politics and upload this film to YouTube. As a result, the inexperienced but honest teacher is elected president and takes part in the fight against corruption. "In doing so, he stumbles through the abysses of Kiev politics, from national bankruptcy to oligarch intrigues to party nights with IMF representatives."

In the last season Dmytro Surikov comes to power, the ruler of a "milk empire", and has Holoborodko arrested. Surikov is ousted by the nationalist Shanna Boryssenko. Holoborodko is finally released from prison, averting the financial catastrophe in Ukraine and uniting the country.

reception

"Servants of the people" (Ukrainian sluha narodu ) is also the name of the party of Volodymyr Selenskyj which during presidential elections in Ukraine on 21 April 2019 as politically not as yet generate trodden actor for president of Ukraine was chosen.

According to Volodymyr Paniotto of the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), both the image of film president Holoborodko and that of Zelenskyi personally may have played a role in Zelenskyi's election victory - the dream of a simple, honest, if unqualified man to become president . Diana Duzyk, media expert at the Ukrainian Institute for Media and Communication, is convinced that the broadcast of the series Servants of the People in the run-up to the elections is “part of the election campaign”.
