At Pentecost in 1855, Antonia Werr (1813–1868) from Würzburg founded the Congregation of the Servants of the Holy Childhood of Jesus. Their intention was the physical and mental care of neglected women and girls.

A long search for a suitable location followed. Important allies were Freiherr Maximilian von Pelkhoven (1796–1864) and the Franciscan Minorite Father Franz Ehrenburg (1823–1889). She eventually rented the so-called "Schlösschen" in the secularized monastery of Oberzell near Würzburg. Here she opened a house with four helpers on Whitsun in 1855 to rehabilitate women who had been released from prison.

In 1863 the community joined the Regulated Third Order of St. Francis . The Congregation of the Servants of the Holy Childhood of Jesus received ecclesiastical recognition in 1888. In 1901 the community moved into the former Premonstratensian monastery in Oberzell .

In 1908 the servants of the holy childhood of Jesus received state recognition and in 1936 papal recognition. The Obernzeller sisters managed also in 1911 by the Catholic Welfare Association , founded in care home for girls, women and children of St. Joseph in the Frankfurter Straße 24, which at that time had a homeless station for education in need of female adolescents and today as a Therapeutic Home Saint Joseph there.

In 1929 the first sisters went to America.

In 1951 sisters were sent to South Africa, where they founded the region of St. Clara. In 1962 the community had 1175 members. In 2007 there were 28 branches in Germany, two in South Africa and two in the USA , in addition to the headquarters in Oberzell Abbey .
