Service regulations of the Deutsche Reichsbahn
The service regulations (DV) of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (1924-1949) represent a compilation of internal service regulations, the systematics (numbering) of which are largely in the publications (DS) of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) and the DV of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) and partly still reflected today in the guidelines of Deutsche Bahn AG .
Historical outline
In the early days of the German railways, hardly any special regulations were required; observance of general police regulations was sufficient. The first regulations dealt at most with the number and distribution of the brakes or related to the travel times of the few trains running. With the increase in train traffic, regulations on train crossings , train formation , shunting and unusual journeys were necessary.
The safety police regulations for rail traffic, which were advised by the first meeting of German railroad technicians in 1850 and which can be seen as the forerunner of both the railway building and operating regulations (BO) and the driving regulations, can be regarded as the most important basis for operational management.

The regulations of the Deutsche Reichsbahn
At first glance, the abundance of service regulations seems confusing for non-railroaders. Nevertheless, the regulations of the Deutsche Reichsbahn are structured in a clear system, which can be described as follows. The service regulations can be distinguished from the outside by a special color of the envelope (see table below). In addition, each service regulation is incorporated into a specific series of numbers, so that one can already deduce the benefit in kind.
