Dierk Stemmler

Dierk Friedbert Johann Stemmler (born June 29, 1935 in Berlin ) is a German art historian and museum curator.

Life

Dierk Friedbert Johann Stemmler studied art history at the Technical University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1968. From 1966 he was a research assistant and from 1976 to 1985 director at the Kunstmuseum Bonn . From 1985 to 1994 he was director of the Abteiberg Museum in Mönchengladbach , succeeding Johannes Cladders .

Stemmler was twice commissioner (curator) of the pavilion of the Federal Republic of Germany at the Venice Biennale . In 1986 he showed paintings by Sigmar Polke (who won the Golden Lion) and in 1988 works by Felix Droese .

Stemmler published numerous publications on modern and contemporary art.
