Richard Askey
Richard Allen Askey (born June 4, 1933 in St. Louis , Missouri - † October 9, 2019 ) was an American mathematician who studied analysis .
Askey studied at Washington University (Bachelor's degree 1953), Harvard University (Master's degree in 1956) and Princeton University , where he received his doctorate from Salomon Bochner in 1961 (Mean Convergence of Orthogonal Series and Conjugate Series) . He was then from 1958 to 1961 an instructor at Washington University, 1961 to 1963 at the University of Chicago and from 1963 assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , where he received a full professorship in 1968 and from 2003 was professor emeritus.
Askey mainly dealt with special functions (introduction of the Askey-Wilson polynomials with James A. Wilson) and the publication of the notebooks by Ramanujan (a very extensive project with Bruce Berndt , among others , which should also supplement the evidence missing from Ramanujan) . He was also interested in math education.
From 1969 to 1970 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1993 and of the National Academy of Sciences from 1999 . He was a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and, from 1996, the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
