Bruce Carl Berndt (born March 13, 1939 in St. Joseph , Missouri ) is an American mathematician who deals with analysis and number theory and is known as the editor of the notebooks of Srinivasa Ramanujan .

Berndt studied at Albion College (Bachelor 1961) and received his doctorate in 1966 from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with J. Roderick Smart ( Identities involving the coefficients of Dirichletseries ). 1966/67 he was at the University of Glasgow . He then went to the University of Illinois in Urbana / Champaign, where he became Assistance Professor in 1967 and from 2006 is "Michio Suzuki Distinguished Research Professor of Mathematics". In 1973/74 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study .

From 1977 onwards, Berndt dedicated himself to the publication of Ramanujan's notebooks (5 volumes) for over 20 years. Ramanujan gave no evidence for his discoveries, which is why Berndt and co-workers (such as George Andrews , Richard Askey ) supplied or looked for in the literature. In total, there are around 3,000 to 4,000 “claims” in the notebooks without evidence. In his work he was able to draw on the notes of GN Watson and BM Wilson in England, who had already started a project to publish the notebooks in the 1930s.

Berndt is also one of the editors of the Ramanujan Journal. In 1995 he also edited Ramanujan's Letters (with Robert Alexander Rankin ).

In 1996 he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for editing Ramanujan's notebooks. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
