The Diesterweg School was built between 1901 and 1903 according to plans by city building officers Franz Frenay and Johann Kling. It was the first building on the Darmstadt school island and is named after the German educator Adolph Diesterweg . The Diesterwegschule consists of the main building built in late historical style along Julius-Reiber-Straße, the former school servant's house on Kasinostraße , which was built in the rural villa style of the Wilhelminian era, and the gym facing the courtyard.
From 1945 to 1950 the American occupation forces used the school as an " America House ", among other things .
In 1989 the Diesterweg School was renovated. In 1990 the gymnasium was converted into an auditorium .
The Diesterweg School, including the enclosure, is a listed building .
The secondary and secondary schools were closed several years ago. The Diesterweg School buildings are now used by other Darmstadt schools, in particular the neighboring Eleonor School and the Justus Liebig School .
There are considerations to make the Diesterwegschule an elementary school again in the medium term due to the increased demand, when the renovation of the two high schools on the school island has been completed.
