Dieter Auner

Dieter Auner (* 1970 in Mediasch , Romania ) is a Romanian-German documentary filmmaker . He emigrated to Germany in 1990 , but moved on to Ireland four years later .

Life

He comes from the ethnic group of the Transylvanian Saxons and grew up in Medias. During the Romanian Revolution in December 1989, he was doing military service in the Romanian Army in Sibiu and witnessed the shootings between the military and the Securitate first hand . A few weeks later, the conscripts were released early and, like most of the other Saxons, he emigrated to Germany in 1990. There he began studying physics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , but is also increasingly interested in photography . In 1994 he left Germany and emigrated to Ireland. There he began his work as a filmmaker. First he worked on numerous Irish and international film productions before directing his first own documentary in 2001 . This is about the trauma of the mass emigration of the Transylvanian Saxons from Romania and portrays a Saxon couple in the rural village of Arbegen , who are one of the last to leave the country. He accompanies the protagonists until they arrive in their new home in Augsburg . In 2006 the film was released under the German title " Ein Siebenbürger Abschied " ( English : Leaving Transylvania ) and shown at several documentary film festivals. However, it had its premiere in Transylvania, at the Astra Film Festival in Sibiu. In 2010 Auner finished his second own film, which is set in Transylvania again and shows the changes in the life of a Romanian shepherd family. The Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu acted as the producer for this film .

Dieter Auner is married and now lives in Galway on the west coast of Ireland.
