Arbegen in the Josephinische Landesaufnahme von Siebenbürgen from 1769 to 1773

Agârbiciu (German Arbegen , såksesch Arbäjen , Hungarian Szászegerbegy ) is a village in Transylvania in Sibiu county ( Sibiu ), Romania . It belongs to the municipality of Axente Sever ( Frauendorf ).

location

The place is located in a southern side valley of the Târnava Mare ( Great Kokel ) on the Vişa ( Weißbach ) stream , about 17 km as the crow flies southwest of Mediasch .

history

Arbegen was originally founded on Adelsboden by German settlers ( Transylvanian Saxons ) around the year 1268 , but then gained the Sibiu law in 1315 together with the neighboring villages of the Schelker and Mediascher Stuhl (the so-called two chairs ) and thus became a free municipality of the Königsboden . The place name is derived from the Hungarian words eger (alder) and begy (floodplain). The first written mention as Egurbeg comes from the year 1343. In 1516 the place had "55 innkeepers, 2 widows, 2 shepherds and a miller".

population

For several centuries Arbegen was shaped by the Transylvanian Saxons . At the beginning of the 20th century they made up just under half of the population, in 1977 more than a third. After the revolution of 1989, most of the residents of German descent emigrated. As a result, the number of inhabitants also fell significantly. Today the place is mostly inhabited by Romanians .
