Dieter Bäuerle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dieter W. Bäuerle (also Baeuerle ; born May 2, 1940 in Chemnitz ) is a German-Austrian physicist who worked in various areas of physics and physical chemistry. He was instrumental in researching laser-matter interactions.

Life

Bäuerle studied physics at the University of Stuttgart , where he received his doctorate in natural sciences in 1969. He then went to Cornell University in Ithaca , New York (1969–1971) as a Max Kade Fellow . After working at Philips Research and habilitation at RWTH Aachen University in 1973, he accepted a professorship for experimental physics at the University of Osnabrück in 1975 . From 1978 until his retirement in 2008 he headed the Institute for Applied Physics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz , Austria.

Bäuerle is considered a pioneer in the field of laser-induced chemical processes at interfaces. He wrote the first monograph on this (1986) with subsequent editions. In 1980 he and his team demonstrated for the first time the direct production of 3D structures by laser-induced deposition from the gas phase, the LCVD process (Laser-Induced Chemical Vapor Deposition); this work was the beginning of 3D printing. In addition, he made contributions in the fields of quantum optics, solid state physics, physical chemistry and medical technology.

Since 1998 he has been a member of the Academy of Sciences, New York; since 1991 Christian Doppler Senior Fellow; Honorary doctorate from the University of Bucharest (2002); Professor Honorario of the Universidad Cesar Vallejo, Trujillo , Peru (2004). He received several other awards, including a. Adolf Schärf Prize for Science (1984). He was visiting professor in Paris, Lecce and Russell S. Springer Professor in Berkeley. Dieter Bäuerle was editor / co-editor of numerous scientific journals and books. He was u. a., Member of the Council of the European Physical Society (EPS, 1979–1983), the Committee of the Semiconductors and Insulators Section of the EPS (1980–1986) and the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS, 1982–1987), on the Board of Trustees of the German Physical Society (DPG, 1998–2004) and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST, 1997–2003), Japan.

In 2003 he founded the GAP (non-profit society for applied physics) and in 2016 the Dieter W. Bäuerle Foundation / Dieter W. Baeuerle Foundation at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen .
