Dieter Bathen (2019)

Dieter Bathen (born September 6, 1968 ) is a German engineering scientist , professor of thermal process engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen , head of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Technology (IUTA) , and chairman of the Johannes Rau research association .

biography

Dieter Bathen studied chemical engineering at the University of Dortmund and later, in addition to his engineering doctorate, organizational psychology . For his doctorate as Dr.-Ing. ( Summa cum laude ) he was awarded the PhD award of the University of Dortmund in 1998. He then became a senior engineer at the chair for systems engineering at the University of Dortmund. After a research stay at the University of Cambridge (UK), for which he received the Rudolf Chaudoire Prize, he received his habilitation and the Venia Legendi for process engineering from the University of Dortmund in 2002 .

In the same year (2002) he moved to Degussa AG (today Evonik AG ) in the chemical industry , where he held various positions in the central division Technology & Engineering and later in Degussa Röhm GmbH.

In 2007 he was offered the newly established chair for thermal process engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen. This reputation was linked to the scientific management of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Technology (IUTA eV) in Duisburg . With the founding of the Johannes Rau Research Foundation in 2014, he was appointed Chairman of the Board and re-elected for a second term in 2019.

research

Since his doctorate, Dieter Bathen has been researching the thermal separation process of adsorption , in particular the removal of pollutants from gases and liquids using activated carbons , zeolites , silica gels and other porous solids. In 2010 he became chairman of the ProcessNet technical committee "Adsorption" (DECHEMA / VDI-GVC ), in 2015 and 2020 he was re-elected in this function.

Volunteering

Dieter Bathen is active on a voluntary basis in various committees and associations, in addition to the Johannes-Rau-Forschungsgemeinschaft u. a. since 2010 in DECHEMA (Society for Chemical Technology and Biotechnology) and VDI-GVC (Association of German Engineers - Society for Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering), since 2016 as elected expert reviewer of the Working Group on Industrial Research Funders (AiF), since 2019 as a member of the FIR Presidium eV at RWTH Aachen , since 2008 in the "Environmental Technology " advisory board of the Air Quality Commission (VDI-KRdL) and as chairman of several VDI guidelines .
