Dieter Irmer

Dieter Irmer (born February 9, 1935 in Wittenberge ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

After studying Classical Philology at the University of Hamburg , Irmer received his doctorate in 1961 with the dissertation On the Primacy of Codex S in Demosthenes criticism . From 1963 he worked as a research assistant at the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae . Together with Joseph-Hans Kühn and others, he edited the Index Hippocraticus , which was published in 1989. Together with Anargyros Anastassiou, he published the testimonies and a supplement in 1997 and 1999.

In addition to his lifelong preoccupation with the Corpus Hippocraticum , Irmer researched the handwritten tradition of Demosthenes. In 1972 he presented the monograph On the Genealogy of the Younger Demosthenes Manuscripts . As part of his work on the history of tradition and textual criticism, Irmer has also translated the relevant philological-historical study by Sebastiano Timpanaro on Lachmann's method .
