Sebastiano Timpanaro

Sebastiano Timpanaro (born September 5, 1923 in Parma , † November 26, 2000 in Florence ) was an Italian classical philologist , essayist , literary critic and committed Marxist .

Life

Timpanaro came from an intellectual and committed family. His father was the physicist and historian of science Sebastiano Timpanaro Senior (1888-1949), who worked as a teacher and director of the Domus Galilaeana in Pisa, his mother the historian of ancient science Maria Timpanaro Cardini (1890-1978). He studied classical philology in Florence, where he was a student of the famous classical philologist Giorgio Pasquali . Eduard Fraenkel , who held guest seminars at the Scuola Normale for several years after Pasquali's death, was also formative for him . His philosophical mentor at this time was Galvano della Volpe . After completing his studies, he first worked as a teacher at vocational schools in the province of Pisa , then from 1960 to 1983 as a proofreader for the then Florentine publisher La Nuova Italia . He refused a career in academic teaching, apparently due to personality reasons, but developed a rich scientific activity. Timpanaro was politically active in various groups of the Italian left ( PSI , PSIUP and PdUP ).

Timpanaro was a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and a fellow of the British Academy . In 1995 he received the prestigious Premio Feltrinelli for filologia e linguistica .

Timpanaro was married to Maria Augusta Timpanaro Morelli.

Timpanaro published numerous works on Latin and Greek philology and history of philology, on the connection between Marxism and the materialism of the Enlightenment, and on the criticism of Freudian psychoanalysis. Through his political writings he exerted influence on the political left as well as through his involvement in the political landscape of Italy.

Classical Philology

In his philological work Timpanaro has dealt with the microphilological criticism and exegesis of ancient Latin, but also Greek texts and their tradition, which found its expression in numerous articles, notes and miscellas, which he summarized in two volumes. In this context, Timpanaro also dealt with linguistics. Closely related to his philological activity was his interest in the history of classical philology , which was nurtured by his teacher Giorgio Pasquali. Among the Latin authors, Timpanaro devoted himself in particular to Virgil and the ancient philology of Virgil, as well as Ennius . In his work on the history of philology, The Origin of the Lachmann Method , Timpanaro examines the diverse starting points that Karl Lachmann systematically combined to form the method of critical elaboration of an ancient text , which was named after him and has since been revised, but which is still fundamentally used.

Enlightenment and 19th Century Italian Literature

In the materialistic - pessimistic thinking of Giacomo Leopardi , Timpanaro valued the fruitfulness of the classical Enlightenment tradition, which remains connected to the rationalism of the 18th century and turns against the spirituality and religiosity of the romantics . Timpanaro's interest in the Enlightenment was also shown in an Italian translation of the anonymously published work Le Bon Sens by Baron d'Holbach . In an essay from 1980 entitled Di alcune falsificazioni di scritti leopardiani , Timpanaro demonstrated that the three sketches for Leopardi's Canto L'Infinito , which were published by Francesco Flora in the Collected Works, were forgeries.

Materialism and marxism

Timpanaro positioned himself as a Marxist humanist within the currents of Marxism . He took the view that materialism was of great importance as a fundamental element of Marxism, but, following Leopardi, emphasized the natural condition of the human condition as opposed to the theory of a purely social condition. The five essays that are summarized in his writing Sul materialismo are considered to be important statements in this field.

Critique of Psychoanalysis

In his book on the so-called Freudian mistake, Timpanaro convincingly shows that the slip of the tongue , which Sigmund Freud compiled and interpreted psychoanalytically in his work Zur Psychopathologie des Everytagsleben (1901) following Rudolf Meringer's psycholinguistic study Versuchen und Verlesen (1895), also can be explained by the typical errors that occur again and again during the transcription process in the handwritten tradition of ancient texts.
